1. Injury prevention
Muscles heal and scar tissue develops during sleep. Scar tissue is fiber that the body creates to repair injuries.
2. Learning new choreography or technique
When asleep, the brain doesn't shut down. Memory connections and motor sequencing occurs during sleep which can affect the mental performance of dancers.
3. Not enough sleep can cause weight gain
When you don't sleep enough, the chemicals in the body shift. For example, the hormone Ghrelin is used for hunger. When you are sleep deprived, ghrelin levels increase and tells the brain that you are hungry. It specifically tells the brain that the body needs more carbohydrates and sugars.
4. Micro-sleeps can be a result of sleep deficiency and are DANGEROUS
Micro-sleeps(momentary sleep) are dangerous as they can be the cause of accidents. For dancers, this lack of awareness can lead to severe injury.
5. Growth hormone is released during sleep
The growth hormone maximizes muscle strength and repair as well as building bone and burning fat. This is an aid to dancers because of the amount of strain they put on their bodies daily.
